About Free UK Museums
The UK is one of the few countries in the world where the major national museums are completely free to enter. The British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Tate Modern and dozens of others charge nothing for their permanent collections.
Why are UK museums free?
Free entry to national museums was introduced in 2001 by the UK government, replacing the previous system of charging for admission. The policy was designed to widen access and increase visitor numbers. It worked — visits to national museums have more than doubled since then.
Best cities for free museums
London has by far the largest concentration — over 20 free museums and galleries, including the British Museum, all three Tate galleries, and the V&A. Edinburgh has four national museums and galleries. Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Oxford, York and Belfast all have excellent free options too.
Free vs paid exhibitions
While permanent collections are free, temporary and special exhibitions usually charge — typically £10-£25 for adults. These often sell out, so book ahead if a specific exhibition is the reason for your visit. Many museums also accept optional donations of £3-£5 at the entrance.
Plan your visit
Most museums are open daily from 10am to 5pm, though some close one day a week (often Monday) and hours vary on public holidays. For booking a trip around a UK bank holiday, see our Bank Holidays Calendar. To plan routes between cities, use our Route Planner.
