A viral WhatsApp message claims that from 8 October 2026, UK Visitor Visa holders can freely search for jobs, attend interviews, and undertake training in the UK. This is dangerously misleading. Here is what actually changed — and what didn't.
⚠️ Important: The Viral Claim is Wrong
Searching for a job, attending job interviews with the intent to work, or undertaking any form of employment remains strictly prohibited on a UK Standard Visitor Visa. The 8 October 2026 changes do not alter this. Anyone acting on the viral WhatsApp message risks visa refusal, deportation, and a future UK immigration ban.
What Actually Changed on 8 October 2026?
The UK Home Office published Statement of Changes HC 584 on 3 September 2026, with most changes taking effect on 8 October 2026. These changes are primarily designed to accommodate the UK's re-association with the Erasmus+ programme — the EU's education, training, youth, and sport programme — which the UK is re-joining from 2027.
The changes expand what certain visitors are permitted to do while in the UK. They do not create a general right to work.
1. Erasmus+ Participants Get New Permissions
If you are a genuine participant in the Erasmus+ programme, you can now use a UK Visitor Visa to:
- Provide or receive training at a UK-based organisation or educational institution
- Take part in courses at a UK-based organisation or educational institution
- Undertake a traineeship of up to 30 days (for those aged 18 or under, with parental consent)
- Carry out job shadowing — participative observation only, not filling a permanent role
- Participate in coaching or training assignments at UK-based sports organisations
You must be able to prove you are a genuine Erasmus+ participant. Organisations hosting you may need to provide evidence that the mobility is part of a genuine Erasmus+ project.
2. Work-Related Training: One Restriction Removed
Previously, if you wanted to come to the UK for intra-corporate training, you had to prove that the same training was not available in your home country. This requirement has been removed.
However, this only applies to training that is genuinely required for your employment overseas — it does not mean you can come to the UK to train for a new job, or to look for work.
3. Artists, Entertainers, and Musicians
Artists, entertainers, and musicians can now attend rehearsals on a Visitor Visa. Defined "entertainment staff" (such as technicians, personal assistants, or production team members) can also support permitted activities, provided they are employed by the artist outside the UK and attend the same event.
4. New Permitted Activities for All Visitors
All visitors can now also take part in:
- Workshops and debates
- Skills competitions — where participants compete by demonstrating skills required for a specific profession or discipline
These are additions to the list of permitted activities, not a relaxation of the core visitor rules.
What Did NOT Change
For the vast majority of visitors — tourists, people visiting family or friends, and general business travellers — nothing has changed.
- Working for a UK company or as a self-employed person
- Searching for a job or attending interviews with the intent to work
- Doing a work placement or internship (unless you are an eligible Erasmus+ participant)
- Accessing public funds or benefits
- Living in the UK through frequent or successive visits
The UK Home Office's own impact assessment states that these changes are expected to support only a "small increase in usage of the Visitor route" relative to the 2.2 million visitor visas and 25.1 million ETAs granted in the year ending March 2026.
Why the Viral Message is Dangerous
The WhatsApp message circulating in Pakistan and other countries claims that "all visit visa holders" can now search for jobs and attend interviews. This is false.
If you travel to the UK on a Visitor Visa and attempt to search for work, attend a job interview, or start any form of employment, you are breaching your visa conditions. Consequences can include:
- Refusal of entry at the UK border
- Cancellation of your visa
- Detention and removal from the UK
- A future immigration ban (re-entry ban) of up to 10 years
Immigration officers are trained to identify visitors whose stated purpose does not match their actual activities. A visitor who claims to be sightseeing but is found attending job interviews will face serious consequences.
What Should You Do If You Want to Work in the UK?
If your goal is to work in the UK, you need the correct visa route. Options include:
- Skilled Worker Visa — requires sponsorship from a UK employer with a valid sponsor licence
- Graduate Visa — for eligible students who have completed a UK degree
- Global Talent Visa — for leaders in specific fields
- Health and Care Worker Visa — for eligible healthcare professionals
The Standard Visitor Visa is not, and will not become, a route to work in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Searching for a job, attending job interviews with the intent to work, or any form of employment is strictly prohibited on a Standard Visitor Visa. The rules changed on 8 October 2026 do not alter this. Anyone who tells you otherwise is spreading misinformation.
The changes primarily benefit participants in the Erasmus+ programme. They can now undertake certain training, courses, job shadowing, coaching assignments, and traineeships of up to 30 days. There are also minor expansions for all visitors, such as attending workshops and debates, and for intra-corporate training no longer needing to prove the training is unavailable in their home country.
No. For general tourists visiting the UK for sightseeing, family visits, or holidays, the rules are unchanged. You still cannot work, study long-term, or access public funds. The changes are targeted at specific professional and educational activities.
Erasmus+ is the European Union's programme for education, training, youth, and sport. The UK is re-joining the programme from 2027, and these rule changes are to accommodate participants in advance. You must be a genuine participant in an official Erasmus+ programme to benefit from the new permitted activities.
You can study for up to 6 months on a Standard Visitor Visa, provided it's not the main purpose of your visit in a way that conflicts with visitor rules. The 8 October changes add specific study permissions for Erasmus+ participants at state-funded schools and academies. General short-term study rules are unchanged.
